Nasal septum surgery (Septoplasty)

The function of the nose is simple - its main purpose is to freely inhale and exhale air, which is also moistened and cleaned of microparticles. As a result of various changes - whether congenital or post-traumatic - the septum can be distorted or deviated to varying degrees, impairing the breathing function.

Breathing is not a natural activity for everyone and it is not something to think about. Problems with a crooked nasal septum that impedes airflow can be solved by septoplasty.

What is septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the deviated nasal septum is modified so that it does not obstruct the air passage. The procedure is performed endoscopically under general anaesthesia and the results are noticeable within a week of surgery. The nose is freer to breathe, and other functions associated with better cleaning of the nose and sinuses may subsequently improve.

The surgical procedure can be combined with external rhinoplasty and laser treatment of the nasal mucosa.

For whom is septoplasty suitable

Indications for surgery are difficulty breathing through the nose, repeated inflammation of the nose and sinuses. Sometimes the procedure is also recommended for patients with chronic bronchitis and asthma, for aesthetic reasons or snoring problems.

What you get from the procedure

  • Correction of congenital or post-traumatic conditions of deviated nasal septum
  • Correction of poor breathing
  • Change in the shape and size of the nose
  • Increase psychological well-being

Before surgery

It is essential to consult a plastic surgeon and an ENT specialist who will perform an endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity. Prior to surgery, it is advisable to consult our nutritional advisor about dietary supplements that may contribute to a better surgical outcome and healing.

The course of the operation

The procedure is performed endoscopically under general anesthesia and takes 30 to 45 minutes. During the procedure, the surgeon releases the nasal mucosa from the distorted cartilage, which is then straightened and sculpted into the ideal position. The mucosal pressure is ensured by the application of plastic fixation strips and anterior nasal tamponade for approximately 48 hours.

After the operation

After septoplasty, the operated areas are swollen and bruising may occur on the face. They will persist for approximately 2 weeks. It is not recommended to sniffle for about a week; compresses and medications recommended by your doctor to speed up the absorption of hematomas are appropriate. The stitches are removed on about the 10th day after surgery.

We recommend complete physical rest for about 10 days after the operation, and then you can do moderate physical activity, such as walking, for the next week. Avoid contact sports for at least 3 months.

Important information

Pain is minimal, but you have to take into account limited nasal patency in the postoperative period, caused by mucosal swelling and healing.
